FOCUS on 2020: A VISION for Peace in the New Year

FOCUS on 20/20, er, I mean 2020.

As I shift my focus from 2019 to 2020, I have chosen a focus word for the new year. It is….wait for it….FOCUS.

Either that, or VISION.

Whatever. They go hand in hand, don’t they?

I can’t be the only one who picks FOCUS or VISION for 2020, but that’s OK. It’s not a competition.

What is your focus word for 2020? Click To Tweet

I told my PONM group that my word was going to be FOCUS.

Then I forgot, and wrote this toast just now, emphasizing my VISION for peace in the New Year:

A TOAST TO 2020

Here’s to peace in the New Year.
Peace at home.
Peace in the world.
Peace within.

And here’s to 20/20 vision
for creating peace where we can,
by tweaking our daily habits,
by adjusting our expectations,
by fixing (or letting go of)
what is broken,
by voting our consciences,
by speaking our minds…

…and for seeing clearly the situations in which we have no control.

Focus and Vision

So, I’m using FOCUS as a verb, and VISION as a noun.

I’ll bet there’s not a problem you’re having, or a goal that you’re working towards, where having a VISION and FOCUS-ing on it won’t be helpful in solving the problem or reaching the goal.

It can be something huge like starting a business, combining families, resolving a health issue, or writing a book.

Or, it can be something smaller, like tweaking one of your household organizing systems that has become annoying. Or, maybe you need to simply change your settings.

Peace in the New Year

As for peace…..there’s not a blog post I’ve written that does not contribute to peace in some way for the right person at the right time.

What about peace in your family: Clutter Counseling: Are You an Odd Couple? Or, 10 Ways to Trick Your Family into Being Organized…? Or, peace within: What are you worried about? Don’t worry — Take Action! Or, Always Believe in Yourself. Adjusting your Facebook feed can contribute to peace as well.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for on my website (don’t forget there’s a Search box on the Blog tab), please let me know what you’re struggling with. I will either help you myself, or point you in the right direction.

Still Leveraging

Last year (2019) my focus word was LEVERAGE. I’d say I did pretty well with it, and I’m currently FOCUS-ing on LEVERAGE-ing my interests, knowledge, and experience with photos, memorabilia, and family history, by writing a book called What’s a Photo Without the Story? (What I have linked to here is the inspiration blog post.) My VISION is that it will encourage you to share your photos and tell your family stories, even — especially — if you are not a genealogist, or an organizer, or a writer. Sound interesting?

(My 2018 word, if you’re curious, was CONNECT.)

What is YOUR focus word for the year? I’d love to know!

If you picked one last year, how did it work out for you?

Great post! I usually do a phrase – but it often starts with a word. Last year’s was “authenticity”, and this year I’m bouncing between “connection” and “intention.” I figure I have two days now to get the phrase figured out – maybe writing a toast would do the trick!

Thanks, Sara! How ’bout “intentional connection”? Just kidding….unless, of course, it works for you. I don’t think it’s as important to have it figured out by Jan. 1, as it is for you to be able to visualize how the word or phrase will help you reach your “doing” or “being” goals.

My word for 2019 was MINDFUL and it didn’t go well. I like doing crossword puzzles while I eat breakfast, and instead of enjoying it, I sometimes felt guilty because I wasn’t eating mindfully. So for 2020 I’m revisiting it with the word CHERISH which will be more about savouring every moment and seeking the good in every situation.

Well, you can’t do EVERYTHING mindfully, and isn’t “mindful” in the eye of the beholder, anyway? Or, maybe in someone else’s eye who suggested it? Now you can CHERISH doing crossword puzzles while you eat breakfast! And you can CHERISH eating mindfully on occasion, too.

It’s fascinating what words, intentions, or goals we pick for each year. And some of us don’t do that at all. In the past, I’ve picked a single word for the year, although I can’t recall which ones they’ve been. Other times, I’ve set out more elaborate plans for what I wanted to accomplish.

Last year, I set an intention and I loved that. It gave me enough flexibility without the pressure to figure everything out. So I’m going to try it again and see how that unfolds. I haven’t crafted the message yet, but that doesn’t worry me. I recall that last year, my intention didn’t come about until New Year’s Eve.

Wishing you a very happy, healthy and vision-focused New Year!

Thanks, Linda, and same to you! I can remember my words because this is only my 3rd year of picking a focus word. (Well, plus I blogged about them.) I think it doesn’t matter how one does it, or when, either. But I do think it’s important to occasionally take stock of one’s life and see if it’s headed in the direction you want it to be, and to make course corrections.

Still considering my word for 2020, but I leaning towards balance or personal growth. I focused on my business in 2019. Still need to keep sight of this, but found I neglected my personal life, so readjusting.

    • Hazel Thornton on December 31, 2019 at 8:19 am

I think constant (or at least periodic) readjustment is crucial for maintaining balance! (As opposed to those who say balance is not possible or desirable.)

First, I totally love your visual of an eye chart to accompany this post. That alone really caught my attention and me want to read! I am a fan of choosing a word for the year. That said, I haven’t picked mine yet. I think I will bring this up as dinner conversation tonight. I am with my family and we are sort of “locked in” because of an ice storm. Perfect!

    • Hazel Thornton on December 31, 2019 at 8:17 am

Thanks, Seana! Hope you weathered the ice storm….and curious how your family discussion of focus words for the new year went?

My word last year was refraction which means “change in direction of propagation of any wave as a result of its traveling at different speeds at different points along the wavefront.” It was a word I came across in 2018 and it helped me define and determine direction.

This year, my word will be easier. It will be stabilize or strengthen. Looking at foundational processes to refine and make it more solid is my goal. I haven’t done this in a number of years and would like to get back to it.

Thanks for sharing your words! Happy New Year.

Ha! You’re speaking my (engineering) language! Good luck in the New Year, Sabrina!
