Wanna know my #1 time management tip?

Time Management TipI love helping my clients spend more of their time doing what they want to, and less of it doing what they have to!

I give them lots of time tips (well, I actually coach them through a whole customized program), such as:

Make Your Own Checklists!

I love checklists! You can Google for free, or purchase, all sorts of ready-made and downloadable checklists, such as those for packing for a trip, or for accomplishing seasonal household chores. HOWEVER…I’ve never met a checklist that I didn’t have to customize for myself. So I make my own. It’s easy, and fun, and you can do it too!

Guilt-Free TV

TVGame of Thrones, anyone? Are you eagerly awaiting the Gilmore Girls revival? Still loyal to Grey’s Anatomy?

If you are a TV hater, and I’ve met many, just move along. This isn’t for you.

If you are still reading, though, and you’re disdainful of TV-watchers, why is that? Are your pastimes really so much more honorable and worthwhile? Do you also judge the books your friends read, and the movies they watch? I submit that the TV you watch is no different from the company you keep. If the shows are uplifting, or educational, or entertaining, why not indulge?

Which Task Management Tool is the Best?

Priority Matrix logo

Some of my clients agonize over which time and task management tools they should use. Paper or electronic? PC or Mac? Synched up to their existing calendars or not? They try one thing, and then another, and often they end up not using any of them. They are intent on finding the BEST one before committing to ANY of them, which is nearly impossible with the hundreds of choices out there.

Here’s what I tell them: The BEST tool is the one you USE. Try a couple, sure, but don’t spend your life trying them ALL, and feeling like you made the wrong decision….and continuing to be disorganized in your management of tasks. You are not missing out on The Perfect App.

Keep Your Checklists Handy

Magnetic clips keep LeAnn’s lists handy!

For privacy, just turn the lists around when company comes.

I love when my clients come up with their own solutions!

LeAnn and I had just finished creating her Morning and Evening Routines, as well as her Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, and Annual Checklists. We also had broken down a few large projects down into smaller, do-able tasks, each with its own Project Sheet. (more…)

Are you doing the right things?

What are your priorities and goals?

Consider this Peter Drucker quote:  Efficiency is doing things right. Effectiveness is doing the right things.

Hmm…but how do you know if you’re doing the right things or not? Many of us do things out of habit, or because other people expect us to. But where is that getting you? Is it getting you where you want to go? It’s easy to choose the right activities once you’re clear on your priorities and goals! (more…)

Yes, you really CAN afford it, and you really DO have the time!

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-image-time-money-concept-alarm-clock-against-coins-image40495091So, what is it, exactly, that I think you can afford and have the time for? Anything you want! All you have to do is to prioritize it and include it in your budgets. You know — your financial and time budgets. And I mean budget in the sense of allocating resources, which does not necessarily involve scrimping.

We say, “I can’t afford that” when it comes to money, when what we really mean is, “I actually don’t want that,” or, “I don’t think I deserve that,” or, “I’m not willing to do what it takes to get that.” And we say, “I don’t have time for that,” when we mean exactly the same things. And both are equally erroneous. You can afford to do whatever you want. OK, maybe not everything you want all at the same time. But you can have a lot more of what you want than you think you can! What is Your Clutter Costing You?

dreamstime_xs_30424420You know you have clutter. We all do, in one form or another, and to varying degrees. But have you ever thought about what it is costing you? Sometimes the cost is obvious, such as late fees incurred for an overdue bill that was lost in a mystery pile of paper, or that you couldn’t find the time to pay. Other times the cost is mental or emotional, such as the embarrassment of having others see your cluttered space. Or, missed opportunities. Or, time you could have spent doing something else.

Why do I care so much about clutter? And about helping people to declutter? Well, here’s what I believe: (more…)

Money Mondays: Are You Paying Your Money Enough Attention?

dreamstime_s_1898318Call it what you will — The Law of Circulation, Feng Shui, The Principle-of-not-getting-your-lights-turned-off-because-you-forgot-to-pay-the-bill — money ebbs and flows and takes on a life of its own. Managing money is kind of like raising children who misbehave to get negative attention if they aren’t getting enough positive attention. (more…)
