The guest-worthy & stress-free home

Do you enjoy house guests? Or avoid them?

Is your home guest-worthy?

Does the thought of having people over cause a small panic attack?

In New Mexico the holidays start with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in October! Many of us host visitors during that time. Some of us have friends and family who visit during the summertime, or during the winter holidays.

Even if no one’s spending the night, we might host parties and other celebrations throughout the year.

Or….we avoid company altogether because we are embarrassed about our clutter and our imperfect homes.

When expecting company, keep in mind: They are coming to see YOU, not your house. Click To Tweet

To take some of the stress out of entertaining, just keep these two things in mind:

1. They are coming to see YOU, not your house.

2. A little tidying goes a LONG way toward the appearance of a clean house. Seriously.

In this Resource Roundup I have gathered all my blog posts that pertain to creating a home you love, keeping it that way, and giving yourself a break. It’s all relative, of course; if your house is a mess by anyone’s standards, you might want to get some help cleaning it up. But sometimes it’s just a matter of relaxing your own standards a bit, so you can enjoy your guests with less stress.

I hope these tips will help you enjoy having company again, especially if you have been avoiding it!

Let me know what works for you, OK?

We have a spare room, but there’s no bed in it. Does that answer your question? 😉

That said, there have been times I’d have liked to offer someone a place to stay for a night…

I remodeled my garage as livable space with a Murphy bed and an extra bathroom. That’s how much I really didn’t want guests using the “guest room” down the hall from my bedroom, and sharing my bathroom, LOL! Next step, I think, is to remove the bed from that room altogether.

You and Janet made me laugh with your comments about not wanting guests to be in the house. I’m the opposite. We have a small home, but even so, we have always loved having guests stay over. When our daughters moved away and got settled in their apartments, we turned their room into an official guest bedroom. So it’s guest ready. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, we had the eight people sleep over (including our daughters, partner, and their first cousins.) Thank goodness for the aerobeds, the sofa, and some floor space!

What resonated with me was your idea that you could be ready “enough.” Let go of perfect. The guests are coming to see you and not inspect your home. Making them feel welcome and comfortable is always my priority.

I enjoy having guests over but not many want to stay overnight. That’s OK with us. I do have a sofa bed in our family room but it is not private. We use that space for an office as well. I guess that’s the downfall of having a smaller home. We multitask each room to the point where there is no privacy for guests.
