Back to School for Adults 2022

Who else loved going back to school as a kid?

New school supplies! New clothes! Reuniting with old schoolmates! Mixed emotions about a new teacher (maybe a whole new school, even) and meeting new classmates.

I’ve been preoccupied with working on a new book and finishing up a couple of genealogy projects for clients. Plus, it’s still hot out and doesn’t feel like time to go back to school. Plus, oh yeah, I’m retired.

But I’m a lifelong learner and I can’t help but notice that educational opportunities abound!

A couple of these programs have already started. But IT’S NOT TOO LATE, since they are not the sort of classes that build on one another. You can pick and choose!

It's back to school time for adults too! Opportunities abound for lifelong learning. Here are three sources of free or cheap classes to consider. Click To Tweet

Legacy Family Tree “Webtember”

Take your genealogy skills to the next level with this online genealogy conference, held each Friday in September: 31 live and pre-recorded webinars in all. Join live for all five Fridays. If that’s not possible, you can enjoy the recordings you register for through September at your convenience.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars provides live and recorded genealogy webinars all year long. All webinars are free the first time they are offered live (not in person, but in real time). After that, the archive of 1,830 recorded webinars is available to members for only $49.95/yr. (Don’t worry, there are filters to help you narrow down your choices!)

One way to see what’s scheduled is to check their website regularly. Another way is to follow them on Facebook.

P.S. You don’t have to use their family tree software to enjoy their webinars.

Save Your Photos Month

This event is brought to you by The Photo Managers. Now in its 8th year, Save Your Photos Month is a worldwide event to help families organize, preserve, share, and celebrate their photo & video memories. This year the theme is “Do You Know?”

Experts worldwide will share their expertise in over 30 mini-classes, tutorials, and live discussions. Classes include tips on preserving your family history, choosing the best scanner, insider tips on Apple Photos, and more!

Register here for free β€” you can see what’s on offer before clicking REGISTER FOR FREE β€” and you’ll get access to classes, live discussions, opportunities to win prizes, and an online support community throughout September.

Anyone who registers during September will have access to the classes through October.

Oasis Lifelong Learning

Oasis is celebrating 40 years of Lifelong Adventures. Their purpose is to serve older adults through lifelong learning, health, and volunteering. These classes and activities used to be for seniors only. But nowadays they are open to adults of all ages. There are nine physical Oasis Centers and numerous partner locations offering in-person and live online video courses across the United States.

Shout out to my friend Jane Ellen who lectures on music and musicians of every genre, and occasionally literature and history . She moved to Florida last year, so ALL of her classes are now on Zoom! Anyone anywhere can register through Oasis Albuquerque.

Oasis Everywhere: These courses are ALL online. They even provide instructions for using Zoom!

Find your Oasis center: Albuquerque, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Rochester, St. Louis, San Antonio, San Diego, Syracruse, Washington DC Metro (Each one has it own catalog of course and activity offerings.)

Individual class costs vary (many are in the $5-10-15 range), and there is no registration fee (at least in Albuquerque there isn’t).

Oasis offers classes all year long. Registration for the Fall Session begins on September 7th.

Do you plan to go back to school (in any way) this fall? Tell us about it in the comments below!

It feels like fall in New York too. The kids are already back to school. Since we live around the block from the elementary school, we’ve noticed an uptick in traffic, cars, and kid sounds. Plus, the leaves are changing. In fact, some are going from green to dead without changing their usual array of fall colors. We’ve had almost no rain and it seems to have caused this oddity.

Anyway, I love all of the resources you shared, and the encouragement to be a life-long learner. I just signed up for a few single sessions courses last week. And it felt very “fall” appropriate. Plus, in several weeks I’ll be launching a live online workshop. I’m so excited! Stay tuned.

One of these days, I really want to get back into genealogy – but today is not that day, unfortunately (schedule is just not free enough…yet). When I do, I will be scouring your website for all of the great information like these classes!

I do think I’ll take a look at the Oasis website and see what all there is – if only taking classes could be a paid job (sigh). Great post!

I’ve never heard of Oasis, but wow – what a wealth of possibilities! Definitely something for everyone.
